Michael Mears, the Eureka County Assessor, grew up in Oregon and moved to Nevada in 1996. He was hired by Eureka County in 1997 as an appraiser and GIS technician in the County Assessor's Office.
Michael assisted Eureka County in developing its Geographic Information System (GIS), a computer mapping and database program, which is today a state-of-the-art resource for Eureka County. He is also certified with the State of Nevada as a real property tax appraiser.
Michael was elected in 2006 and took office in 2007, replacing Jim Ithurralde, who retired after 30 years of service as the County Assessor.
Michael has served as the Eureka County representative to the State Land Use Planning Advisory Council (SLUPAC), and is a member of the Nevada Assessor's Association as well as the International Association of Assessing Officers.
Michael is very active in his community, belonging to several organizations. He serves in the Eureka Lions Club where he has held many offices including president, secretary and treasurer. Michael is also a Lions International Melvin Jones Fellow and received the Zone Chairman of the Year award in 2006 for his service to the Lions of the State of Nevada, District 46. He is also active as a volunteer fireman and is a member of the Diamond Valley Baptist Church.
He is married to wife Heather and is the father of Kelsey, Brendan, Delaney and Donovan. In his spare time, Michael enjoys coaching baseball, playing guitar, hunting and riding his motorcycle.
